Bike Tour. From Palmanova to Trieste.

A 4-day bicycle tour that includes a three-stage itinerary cycling tour starting from Palmanova and arriving in Trieste. The bicycle route is developed on the low Alpe Adria bike lane and on the bake lane of the Adriatic Sea, in some parts even on low traffic roads. The bottom is asphalted and dirt in good condition. The trend is flat. Cycling Alpe Adria was born with a cross-border cooperation project, in 2015 it was recognized as the “cycle track of the year” at Fiets en Wandelbeurs in Amsterdam and in 2016 received the first prize at Cosmobike’s Green Road Award. The Tour starts from Palmanova, a nine-pointed star town fortress called “National Monument”, continuing to Aquileia, a precious treasure chest of art and history, one of the largest and richest Roman Empire citties, since 1998 an Unesco heritage, and arrives in Grado, a place full of surprises, united to the mainland by a thin strip of land, which in some places can look like Venice. The Ciclovia Alpe Adria Radweg ends in Grado but the Tour continues along the indications of the FVG-2 cycle path (Ciclovia dell’Adriabike, also part of Eurovelo 8 and Adriabike cyclotouristic circuits). By pedaling, you will cross the most suggestive natural environment of Friuli Venezia Giulia, like the Valle Cavanata, the Area of Caneo until to reach the island of Cona, a unique habitat for the high biodiversity that makes the site of highest naturalistic interest. With a private transfer you will reach the beginning of the Trieste coast and here you will pedal suspended between the Karst and the sea, between rocks and sails, with breathtaking views over the Gulf of Trieste. At the end of the coast it ends at the Castle of Miramare, one of the most beautiful castles in Italy, and its wonderful park. The Tour ends in beautiful Trieste, you will discover the history, monuments, squares and natural beauties such as the Grotta Gigante on the Karst, “containing the world’s largest hall”, Guiness of the primates in 1995. This Tour will give you an experience unique, a journey of history, nature and tastings of local produce.

PROGRAM

First day: Palmanova

Arriving in Palmanova, an incredible fortified city built by the Serenissima Republic of Venice in 1593. Before entering the city through one of its monumental doors: Aquileia, Udine and Cividale, Bike lane runs on a dirt road that offers beautiful views of bastions and the fortified fortifications of the starry city. Inside the walls of Palmanova, the large central square surrounded by historic buildings is compulsory stop point for all cyclists traveling through Bike lane Alpe Adria Radweg. Dinner and overnight stay.
Second day: Strassoldo

Coming out of the fortress of Palmanova, you go through the fortified structures built in the Napoleonic era and continues along the moat of Taglio, until reaching Strassoldo, a picturesque medieval village characterized by two castles and crossed by some rivers of resurgence.
Second day:Aquileia

After crossing Cervignano del Friuli, a large town bathed by the river Ausa, follow the directions for Terzo di Aquileia and crossing the village, where Ciclovia offers us beautiful views of the river from the name to the village, the cycle path starts at run on the slopes of another abandoned railway to reach after a few miles to Aquileia, the historic capital of Friuli and the largest archaeological center in northern Italy. In Basilica Square you will find a guided tour of the Basilical Complex and Archaeological Areas, you will discover the history and curiosity of the place. Not just history ... your Tour continues ... on the road between Aquileia and Grado, you will be guided to one of the most prestigious wine cellars in the area with the story of wine history in Roman times. Finally tasting local wines and typical products.
Second day: Grado

It resumes pedaling on the bike path over the old railroad to the characteristic but dilapidated Belvedere station. On the side of the embankment on which the road connecting Grado to the mainland runs, there is an evocative cycling track that crosses the lagoon. Clearly visible on the edge of the lagoon, on one of the few inhabited islands, the Marian shrine of Barbana. The cycle path ends just before the swin bridge that allows access to the historic town of Grado. For cyclists who have traveled Bike lane during the summer they can have a refreshing swim in the waters of the upper Adriatic and a walk in the old town. The Bike lane Alpe Adria Radweg ends in this town with great history. Dinner and overnight stay.
Third day: Cavanata Valley, Island of Cona and Trieste

On the morning of the third day, after visiting the town from the historic center to the Nazario Sauro waterfront, take the FVG 2 waterfront bicycle route. A few kilometers from Grado you go in the Cavanata Valley, a protected lagoon area with plenty of birdlife. Continuing along the road along the riverbank you reach the resort called Canéo, by the presence of a dense cane thicket, until you enter the Natural Reserve of the Foce of Isonzo with the destination of the Island of Cona. By private transport you arrive at the beginning of the Trieste coast and here you ride between the scents of the carso and the sea, reaching to the Castle of Miramare and its wonderful park. After the stop at the Castle, you will resume your journey to Trieste, crossing the Barcola seafront, which is full of bathers during the summer. Arrive in Trieste for dinner and overnight.
Terzo giorno: Trieste e Grotta Gigante

In the morning of the last day there is a guided tour of Trieste from the shore to the Castle of San Giusto, symbol of the city. Private transfer to Obelisk of Opicina and pedaling you follow the tram path to Opicina. From there, along the smaller streets, you reach the Grotta Gigante. It will leave you breathless its greatness and the explosion of remarkable limestone formations with high stalagmites more than 10 meters. Guided Tour of the Cave. Tasting of wines and local products in a characteristic cellar of the Karst.
