Cividale, founded by Giulio Cesare with the name of Forum Iulii, from which the name Friuli derives, became the seat of the first Lombard duchy in Italy. A historical and artistic heritage that in 2011 was recognized by UNESCO. Palmanova the city Fortress city-fortress preserved in extraordinary conditions. National monument since 1960, in 2017 it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the transnational site Venetian defense works between the 16th and 17th centuries: State from Earth – State from the Western Sea.Aquileia, considered by UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site. PROGRAM
1st day Cividale – Palmanova – Udine
Arrival of the group in Udine and in the late morning in Cividale, founded by Julius Caesar with the name of Forum Iulii, from which comes the name Friuli, became the seat of the first Longobard duchy in Italy. A historical and artistic heritage that in 2011 was recognized by UNESCO, placing Cividale at the beginning of the Longobard route in Italy in an itinerary that allows you to discover wonderful treasures. Guided tour of the Lombard Temple. Lunch in a restaurant and departure for Palmanova the city Fortress preserved in extraordinary conditions. National Monument since 1960, in 2017 it became part of the Unesco Heritage on the transnational site. Venetian defense works between the 16th and 17th centuries: State of the Earth -State of the Western Sea. Then arrival in Udine and guided tour of the historic center with its squares with Venetian charm and ancient palaces: from Libertà Square, called “the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland”, to Matteotti Square (or of Herbs). Udine in the eighteenth century was the city of Giambattista Tiepolo who here reached his artistic maturity. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
2nd day Udine – Aquileia – Grado
Breakfast at the hotel, departure for Aquileia, considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, guided tour of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta where you can admire the famous early Christian mosaics (4th century) the Crypt of the Excavations with the beautiful mosaics of the church built in the fourth century by the bishop Teodoro on the structures of an ancient Roman villa and the National Archaeological Museum. Lunch in a restaurant and wine tasting at the old cellar. Continuation to Grado guided tour of the “old city” with the early Christian buildings of the Church of Santa Eufemia, the octagonal baptistery annexed, the Lapidarium and the Church of Santa Maria della Grazie. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight
3rd day Forni di Sopra and the Friuli Dolomites Park
Breakfast at the hotel, departure for Forni di Sopra and the Friuli Dolomites Park. The park is located on the mountain ranges enclosed between the rivers Tagliamento and Piave., The Dolomite peaks, UNESCO heritage, and the beautiful natural scenery make this area a true paradise for hiking, trekking and Mountain climbing. Visit to the wildlife center and to the Ethnographic Museum. Ascent by cable car to Varmost alpine cottage and lunch. Time for relaxation and walks. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
4th day Forni di Sopra – Vajont Dam – Erto Casso and Barcis Lake
Breakfast at the hotel, departure for the now disused Vajont Dam, was built between 1957 and 1960 in the territory of the municipality of Erto and Casso. It is sadly famous for the disaster of October 9, 1963, when a landslide of Mount Toc crashed into the basin, causing it to overflow and flood the village of Longarone, in the province of Belluno, causing over 1900 victims. Guided tour of the dam and continuation of the towns of Erto and Casso, made famous thanks to the writer Mauro Corona. Then arrived at the Barcis Lake located in the heart of Valcellina. The lake is just a stone’s throw from the Forra del Cellina nature reserve and the Prescudin Forest. Travel with the tourist train in the towns of Barcis and Andreis through the Old Route and the Forra del Cellina. Walk on the Tibetan bridge. Hotel accommodation dinner and overnight.
5th day Palù di Livenza – Sacile
Breakfast at the hotel, departure for Malnisio and visit to the “A. Pitter” hydroelectric plant. It is a splendid example of industrial archeology where it is possible to retrace its history and understand its functioning. At the end of the visit, lunch in a restaurant and transfer to the Palù di Livenza pile-dwelling site – in the 90s of the last century it was possible to reconstruct at least three construction types of pile-dwelling structures, chronologically dating between 4,500 and 3,800 BC. The materials found and recovered are very numerous and consist mainly of chipped stone tools, ceramic fragments and wooden remains of the structures of the huts. Thanks to the exceptional dating of the findings and the perfect state of conservation of the archaeological remains, Palù was registered in 2011 in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Then visit the Humus Park, the most important Italian event of Land Art (is an artistic form that uses natural materials taken from a territory whose works remain “on display” in the same territory). At the end of the visit departure for the places of origin.
