from June to October 2020
5 days / 4 nights
A trekking trail from refuge to refuge in the Natural Park of the Friuli Dolomites, since 2009 UNESCO World Heritage. Away from the crowded Dolomites, a real hiking raid that in 4 days touches the shelters: Flaiban-Pacherini, Pordenone, Padua and Giaf, crossing the marvelous and wild valleys of the unknown groups of Pramaggiore, the Monfalconi, Spalti di Toro and Cridola, with numerous possibilities of variations with different difficulties and commitments and even climbs to the summits. With the possibility of staying the night before or the last at the lake of Barcis or Forni di Sopra for a moment of relaxation and cultural visits. You can start from any of the Refuges indicated, we recommend to make the crossing in a clockwise direction. From Forni di Sopra in Carnia you can make the first stop at Shelter Flaiban-Pacherini or Giaf; if you come from Pordenone you can start from Pordenone shelter, if instead you come from Cadore (Pieve di Cadore) it is advisable to start from the Padua shelter. On the next map in red the main circuit, in pink the alternative routes and in blue the access to the shelters.
PROGRAM
Day 1 – From Giaf to Flaiban-Pacherini Refuge 6:00 h 1000 m 12 km
The crossing to the Ref Flaiban-Pacherini takes place along the enchanting Truoi by the sclops, the so-called gentian path, which in a continuous succession of environments and blink of an eye goes beyond the Urtisiel fork, the wide plateau with the Valmenon shelter, the Canpuròs (the fairytale alpine prairie that the summer blooming makes a dream place to stop), the Brica forks and Hell, descending finally in the high Val di Suola. Difference in height 1000 meters, 6 hours, difficulty E. CAI trail n. 361 (up to Valmenon), 369 (up to the Musée Pass), 362. Overnight at the Flaiban-Pacherini refuge
2nd day From Flaiban-Pacherini Refuge to the Pordenone Refuge 4:00 h 500 m 8 km
From the hut, go up to the Passo di Suola, cross the Rua Alta fork, the Pramaggiore fork (possible climb to the peak of Mount Pramaggiore 2478 m, the highest and most scenic of the group), then downhill through the bucolic Val dell’Inferno and the val Postegae to the ref. Pordenone. Difference in height 800 meters, 5-6 hours, difficulty EE (for the top of Pramaggiore short passages of I degree). Signals CAI 363, 366 and 362. Alternatively it is possible to climb to the Mus pass and the direct descent to the ref. Pordenone for the Val di Guerra and the Val Postegae. Difference in height 500 meters, 4 hours, difficulty E. Trail CAI 362. From the step of the Mus for experts possible digression to the Torrione Comici for the hardy via ferrata Cassiopea (necessary via ferrata set, calculate another 2 hours). Overnight at the Pordenone Refuge.
3rd day From the Pordenone Refuge to the Padova Refuge 5:00 h 1100 m 10 km
The crossing to the Padova shelter takes place along the famous Val Montanaia for the Montanaia pass, passing at the foot of the extraordinary Bell Tower of Val Montanaia, the “stone cry” known by mountaineers from all over Europe. Rather tiring but in great surroundings. After passing the Montanaia Forcella you descend through the Val d’Arade to the large meadow clearing of the Padova shelter. Difference in height 1100 meters, 5 hours, difficulty EE. Signpost CAI 353 up to Val d’Arade, then 342 and 346. To avoid the steep descent from Forcella Montanaia the alternative route is the ascent to the Monfalcon di Cimoliana valley and the descent in Val d’Arade to Monfalcon Forni Fork, giving up, however, to see the bell tower closely. Signpost CAI 349. Overnight stay at the Padova refuge.
4th day From the Padova Refuge to the Giaf Refuge 4:00 h 700 m 8 km
From the Padova shelter you enter the heart of the Monfalconi with the spectacular crossing of two forks, the Monfalcon fork and the Cason fork, passing that magical rocky amphitheater where the red metal structure of the Marchi-Granzotto Camp rises in total solitude. Difference in height 1100 meters, 6 hours, difficulty EE. Signpost CAI 342. As an alternative (or for those who had already passed through the Forni Monfalcon fork on the previous day) you can more comfortably climb the Scodavacca fork in a beautiful Dolomite landscape and from here descend shortly to the Giaf refuge, along the direct path or also covering a stretch of the Ring of Bianchi. Difference in height 700 meters, 3-4 hours, difficulty E. Those who have experience and training can also climb to the Tacca del Cridola and the Cridola Peak (2581 meters, II degree). Signpost CAI 346. Overnight at Refuge Giaf.
5th day OPTIONAL Dam of Vajont – Erto Casso and the lake of Barcis
In the morning departure for the disused visit of the Vajont Dam. Built between 1957 and 1960 in the territory of the municipality of Erto and Casso. It is sadly famous for the disaster of October 9, 1963, when a landslide of Mount Toc collaps in the basin, causing it to overflow and flood the village of Longarone, in the province of Belluno, causing over 1900 victims. Free visit to the dam and continuation to the towns of Erto and Casso, made famous thanks to the writer Mauro Corona. Then you arrive at the Barcis Lake located in the heart of Valcellina. The lake is just a stone’s throw from the Forra del Cellina nature reserve and the Prescudin Forest. Travel with the tourist train in the towns of Barcis and Andreis through the Old Route and the Forra del Cellina. Walk on the Tibetan bridge. Possibility to change the trekking route or to reverse the order of visits.
