Thursday - arriving in Trieste, tour of the downtown, historical Cafés, Castle of Miramare

Piazza Unità d'Italia, Historical Cafés, Castle of Miramare

Arriving in Trieste in the morning and check-in at the hotel, then you will have a guided tour of the downtown and “Piazza Unità d’Italia “ square, one of the most crowded meeting place. The main characteristics are the ”fontana dei 4 continenti”, a fountain representing the world by four allegorical statues that recall the features of the people who lived in the four continents known at that time (Europe, Asia, Africa and America) and that is Europe's largest square located next to the sea. And then tour of the historical Cafè (Caffè Tommaseo, Caffè San Marco, Caffè degli Specchi, Caffè Tergesteo). These Cafés are able to evoke a classic atmosphere, place described as hangout for writers like Svevo, Saba, Joyce and Magris. The afternoon will be dedicated to the visit of the Miramare Castle. This resindence was built around the year 1855 in the namesake area of Trieste by the will of Ferdinand Maximilian of Hapsburg. The castle holds precious artistic operas, from pictures to the original furnishing, some made in the East Asia.

Friday- The Carso: Grotta Gigante and farmhouse/winery wine tasting and visit to the cellars

Grotta Gigante is one of the world's largest tourist cave putting in the 1995 Guinness Book of Records : 98,50 metres high, 76,30 metres wide and 167,60 metres long for a total volume of 365.000 m3. In the nearby, there is the Milic farmhouse/winary located in the deep of the Carso plateau and at the same time you’ll have a beautiful view on the Trieste's gulf. The handcrafted wines are stored in a real cave to maintain the ideal temperature and taste intact. Then here is the start to the walk among the numerous paths of Carso.

Saturday- San Giusto and Risiera of San Sabba

San Giusto and the Risiera di San Sabba

Departure in the morning for San Giusto complex, that includes The Cathedral, the castle, the walls, the museum of the catle, and the lapidarium Tergestino.
The Cathedral: the main catholic religious building of the city. Today is the ensemblement of the Santa Maria Church and the San Giusto Church.
The Castle/Museum: inside you can find historical iscriptions and memorial stones, military standards and crests of the ancient nobles families. Are exposed the autentich version of the two bronze figures, "Mikeze e Jakeze" on the top of the Town Hall.
The lapidarium Tergestino: collects numerous and various ancient rome artifacts.
In the afternoon, guided visit to the Risiera di San Sabba and to the Common grave (foibe) of Basovizza.
